Language Learning and Assessment through Digital Storytelling Project

This past fall, UNC-CH students in the EDUC 790 course worked with CCEE staff to develop their own digital stories as part of their coursework.

In that course, the learning objectives for the students were:

  • Students will understand that a student’s identity is integral with how they learn academic content;
  • Students will demonstrate an ability to assess listening comprehension, oral language production, and writing through the use of teacher/student created digital stories; and
  • Students will be able to teach students to develop their own digital stories that will demonstrate the content knowledge and language proficiency of the emergent bilingual student.

The signature assignment for this course was to develop a digital story that connects the MAT students’ funds of knowledge to their content area. The student then developed assessments for students, based on the digital story, to determine the listening comprehension, oral language production, and writing skills. Once students have completed this project, they were able to teach their students how to create a digital story that connects their funds of knowledge with academic content.
