College Application Counseling

Session 1:

  • Information gathering via questionnaire and discussion
  • Introduction to college application process
  • Review of information and first attempt at narrowing down college interest list
  • Review of common application

 

Session 2:

  • Selection of colleges of interest
  • Review of criteria for applicants for each college and setting up “accounts” at several colleges as a guide for independent follow up for additional colleges
  • Begin common application with guidance from counselor
  • Discuss topics for essay writing and assign outline for writing essay

 

Session 3:

  • Focus on essays
  • One on one assistance with essay writing
  • Review and revision of all applications
  • Assignment of completion of all essays

 

Session 4:

  • Final review and revision of all essays to be submitted
  • Final submission of applications if ready, or help in submitting the primary ones with others to be done independently

 

The goals for the first couple of sessions may actually extend into later sessions depending upon the student.  There will be a fair amount of work that each student will need to do independently to have sessions remain at only four.  Additonal sessions can be added if needed.

Instructor: Darcy Berger is an Educational Consultant, Counselor and College Counselor who works with preschool through college-age students. For the past three years, Darcy has successfully helped students and parents through the various aspects of the college planning process including college choice and the full application process. She has worked in public and private school settings in exceptional children’s programs, counseling, administration, and admissions. Her undergraduate training in Exceptional Children’s Education was completed at Syracuse University. She received her Master of Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she has worked as a Clinical Instructor.
